Reviews: While this live tape (recorded in Holland, '86) doesn't pack the punch of a bunch of adolescent loonies, the upbeat mid-tempo sing-along punk showcased here is pretty impressive, even by modern standards. SUBS fans will definitely dig this. -Walter Glaser (from Maximum Rocknroll #38, July 1986) Alive in Holland '86 is the subtitle. Done on 24 tracks and I don't know why they needed that many but the sound is good and Charlie is right up front. A punk rock singer as old as Mick Jagger with no sign of tiring, this guy is my idol. If I could write songs this cool and hang out for a decade as frontperson I'd shit. UK Subs were part of the second wave of bands in England, post-Pistols, then stuck around to be popular with the third generation by which time the factions of Oi and peace punk were underway. I'm pretty sure UK Subs have appealed to all of the above in England. For sure they're a pretty big draw in LA where they headline whenever they come over. If someone figures that a decade after a genre starts all practitioners have either dumped it or sound hackneyed they haven't heard much of this. Pure punk for pandemonium people. ROIR does it again, and I think there's a double disc out on vinyl about now too. -Shane Williams (from Factsheet Five #19, August 1986) |
